Five UFC belts up for grabs this summer

Over the weekend, two more UFC championship bouts were finalized for the summer, and it's clear that the UFC wants to keep those championship belts moving. Every belt, except for the welterweight belt that is in limbo because of Georges St-Pierre's injured knee and the just-contested light heavyweight belt, will be on the line between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

-- Bantamweight: Champion Dominick Cruz will rematch Urijah Faber at UFC 148 on July 7 in Las Vegas

-- Featherweight: Champion Jose Aldo will fight Erik Koch at UFC 149 on July 21 in Calgary

-- Lightweight: Champion Benson Henderson will rematch with Frankie Edgar at UFC 150 on Aug. 11 in Denver

-- Middleweight: Champion Anderson Silva will rematch with Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, which is the most stacked UFC event since UFC 129 last April.

-- Heavyweight: Champion Junior dos Santos will fight Frank Mir at UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas.

Throw in a free on Fox show, a Fuel and an FX show and UFC 147 with Wanderlei Silva fighting Vitor Belfort, it's going to be a ... wait for it ... hot summer of MMA. Which belt is most likely to have a new owner by Labor Day? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Hominick, Yagin, Browne and Rothwell pocket UFC 145 bonuses

The bonuses for UFC 145 were given to main card fighters, who put on a more exciting show than the preliminary bouts. Mark Hominick and Eddie Yagin's bloody decision was awarded Fight of the Night. Ben Rothwell's quick knockout of Brendan Schaub won Knockout of the Night, while Travis "Hapa" Browne won Submission of the Night for his arm triangle of Chad Griggs. Each bonus gave the fighter an extra $65,000.

World traveler Dana White in air an astounding 33 hours in four-day span

Yes, Dana White is worth millions of dollars. Yes, he gets to hang out with all sorts of cool celebrities. Yes, he has a private plane and a fancy sports car and multiple homes and, well, anything that anyone worth nine figures can buy.

But do you really want to be Dana White? Do you really want to do what it takes to be the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship? In theory, it sounds fairly enticing, until you hear some of the details -- the gory details, in my opinion.

White said Wednesday from his home in Las Vegas that from late Friday through Tuesday, he spent a total of 50 hours in the air. After figuring the flight times, it appears the correct number is 33 hours in the air, though that doesn't account for stops or waiting time. For the mathematically challenged, 33 hours is a full day and a quarter.

White's journey started late Friday, after the live airing of "The Ultimate Fighter" in Las Vegas. After White completed his obligations on the show at about 8 p.m. Pacific, he headed to the airport for a flight to Stockholm, Sweden.

The plane left Las Vegas at 10 p.m. Pacific. About 11 hours later, he was in Stockholm to be cageside for UFC on Fuel 2. When the fight card ended, White and crew hopped a plane for a six-hour flight to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, for meetings with his partners. When the meetings were complete, it was an almost 16-hour flight from Abu Dhabi to his home in Las Vegas.

"I don't know what it is, but I don't get jet-lagged," White told Cagewriter. "I guess I'm lucky. But you know how on the Internet, a lot of people say I'm fat? I get it a lot -- 'Hey, you fat pig,' that kind of thing -- but when people meet me, they say, 'You know, you're not really as fat as you look in pictures or on TV.' But when I'm in the plane that long, I kind of get bloated, swelled up, whatever you want to call it. I can't even close my fist sometimes."

White's travels aren't done. He'll be in Las Vegas through Friday, handling his duties with "The Ultimate Fighter" yet again. After the fight, he'll hop a plane for Atlanta, so that he can attend UFC 145 at Philips Arena on Saturday.

That's a simple four-hour cross-country trip. After the news conference that will begin early Sunday morning, White will hop his plane back to Vegas for a nice little West Coast to East Coast commute in a span of about 30 hours.

He's not flying Spirit Airlines, the worst airline known to man, and he's not squeezed into a middle seat next to a 330-pound guy who smells like he last showered in the Clinton Administration, but it's air time nonetheless.

There may be some folks who find that kind of a job appealing, but don't count me among that group.

We gonna fight or we gonna flip? Brimage-Blanco fight ends with gymnastics

Editor's note: Jay Busbee is cageside for Cagewriter in Atlanta. Follow him on Twitter.

ATLANTA -If you're an MMA fighter, there's a right way and a wrong way to show exactly how athletic you are. Marcus Brimage and Maximo Blanco chose the wrong way.

Brimage and Blanco opened UFC 145 with a largely drama-free opening bout, 15 minutes in which the fighters logged more miles walked than punches landed. Brimage had trouble getting Blanco to the floor, and Blanco didn't stay down long once he got there. But between the final horn and the judges' verdict — split decision in favor of Brimage — the fighters began a curious little display that might not have had the effect they wanted.

[ Related: Travis Browne and Matt Brown highlight UFC 145 prelim card ]

As the horn sounded, Blanco raised his arms in a self-declared victory. With his crew filing into the ring, Brimage shook his head in disgust. And then Blanco ripped a page from the playbook of NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, who backflips off his car after every victory.

Blanco unleashed an array of back tucks, back handsprings and round-offs, and Brimage, with an "anything you can do, I can do better" smirk, matched Blanco's every move. It was a pretty damn impressive display of athleticism, except for the fact that the crowd had come here to see fighting, not synchronized tumbling. The boos rained down from an already-full Philips Arena; the crowd would have to wait another bout for its blood.

Jon Jones’ next opponent: Dan Henderson

After Jon Jones defended the UFC light heavyweight belt with a win over Rashad Evans, questions immediately turned to his next opponent. At Saturday's post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White confirmed Dan Henderson would get the next shot at trying to unseat Jones.

This title shot comes after Henderson had a banner year in 2011. He won the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt, beat MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko, then returned to the UFC with a win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in a fight that's considered one of the best of all time.

It will be Henderson's third chance to win the UFC belt. After winning titles in Pride, Henderson lost UFC title shots to Anderson Silva at middleweight and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at light heavyweight. Back in 1998, Henderson won the UFC middleweight tournament at UFC 17, but that is the only UFC title he's won in his 15-year MMA career.

[ Also: UFC 145 recap: Jon Jones' length crucial in handling Rashad Evans for decision win ]

Though White didn't nail down a date for the Jones-Henderson bout, UFC 149 in Calgary was mentioned as a possibility.

Could Henderson be the man to stop Jon Jones? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Reader Rants: Cagereaders take on the Olympics, Jon Jones/Muhammad Ali comparisons and advice for Rashad Evans

After you had plenty to say about Brock Lesnar, Brock Lesnar and Brock Lesnar last week, Cagereaders were a bit quieter this week. However, you still had plenty of opinions to share. Read on for the latest Reader Rants. If you want to join in, like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on stories. Also, we still are looking for your picks on the UFC 145 main card, so go like the page and tell us who you're picking and why.

MMA fans look at the idea of the sport in the Olympics with a bit of skepticism.

That would be very cool, but the Olympics is very heavy on safety. Probably it would be like combat sambo with the headgear and shin guards, and maybe an elbow pad. -- Gab'bo Hofileña Delgado

I can't see it happening. If all the title holders decided to fight in the Olympics that would mean 3-4 months with no title fights. It's hard to sell PPVs without title fights. -- Kevin Dailey

The UFC made another Jon Jones/Muhammad Ali comparison in a video posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page. Readers felt the comparison was a bit too early in Bones' career.

Purely fighting, okay, the comparison is fine. Young, talented, seemingly unstoppable. But Ali was culturally so much more than a boxer, and I like Jones but I don't see him as a cultural icon forty years after he stops fighting. -- John Wilcox

No offense to Bones, but that comparison doesn't fit as much to me as Ali to Anderson Silva. Same attitude, same long-term domination, not nearly the same cultural impact... but I think Silva would be the closest MMA fighter to compare to Ali. -- Jason Zachary

After hearing advice from Rashad Evans' mother on how to handle Jones, several Cagereaders offered their advice to Evans. Much of it is not very nice.

Fake an injury before the fight cuz jones is going to crush him. -- Doug Martin

The night before the fight, you pull a Tonya Harding! -- William Corral

Use plenty of ice for the swelling and lots of Kleenex to wipe your tears. -- Jimbo Thompson

Pictures of the Day: Rashad Evans and famous people

As Rashad Evans trained for this Saturday's title bout with Jon Jones, something about his camp attracted famous people.
Rashad Evans shared this picture of when football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin dropped by their camp. Do you think they're discussing the draft position of Chandler Jones?

During a trip to Puerto Rico, Evans met up with boxing legend Felix Trinidad. It was pretty rude to punch the camera, gentlemen.

Here, Evans is with Victoria Azarenka, the No. 1 ranked tennis player in the world and the winner of the 2012 Australian Open. As shown on "Primetime," he also was in the stands for one of her matches.
Before Evans' UFC 133 bout with Tito Ortiz, he picked up striking tips from another boxing legend. What advice do you thin Bernard Hopkins had for Evans?

‘Kid’ Yamamoto saves injured man’s life at Tokyo subway

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto, who has fought for the UFC, K-1, Shooto and Dream, was in a Tokyo subway when he spotted an injured man on the tracks. Yahoo! Japan is reporting his actions saved the man's life.

Yamamoto jumped onto the tracks when he saw the injured man, who was bleeding heavily from his forehead. He tried to lift him off, but couldn't do it on his own. Yamamoto convinced bystanders to help him. Together, they moved him off the tracks to safety before the next train came along. The injured man is now in stable condition at an area hospital.

After an impressive career in Japan, Yamamoto lost three straight fights in the UFC. His last bout was a submission loss to Vaughan Lee at UFC 144 in February.

Eddie Yagin’s star rises; has Mark Hominick’s set?

Editor's note: Jay Busbee is cageside for UFC 145. Follow him on Twitter.

ATLANTA — Shortly after 10:30 Eastern on Saturday night at UFC 145, two careers crossed paths.

Mark Hominick, the onetime title contender who's fallen on hard times, squared off against the undistinguished, largely unknown Eddie Yagin. The result was the best fight of the night to that point, a featherweight bout that left both men bloodied and beaten.

Right from the start, Yagin made it clear that whatever Hominick's pedigree, Yagin wouldn't blanch. The so-called "Filipino Phenom" bored in on Hominick with lethal speed for seven uninterrupted minutes. Problem is, the fight went the full 15, and by the time it was done, both men were beaten beyond recognition

This was an upright fight; neither fighter even attempted a takedown. Yagin put Hominick on the mat with uppercuts followed by devastating overhand rights, combinations that raised an egg-sized swelling on Hominick's right cheek. And through the first half of the fight, it appeared that would be enough to do in the once-promising Canadian.

But Hominick didn't become a onetime championship challenger on reputation alone. And although he had a rough 2011, losing the championship bout in a decision and another fight in a seven-second knockout, he still had enough in the tank to turn Yagin's nose into a bloody mess.

As the second round closed and the third opened, Yagin's eyes widened, bringing to mind Mike Tyson's old line about everyone having a plan until they get punched in the face. And for a brief moment in the third round, it appeared that Hominick could right his listing career with a knockout of Yagin. But his punches weren't landing with enough force, his jabs weren't nearly quick enough, and Yagin, bloody face and all, stayed on his feet until the final horn.

After the fight, the Filipino Phenom was both gracious and elated. "Hominick is veteran and unbelievably badass," he said. "I was hoping I was going to get that fight with Mark, and the fight was exactly as I pictured it. I thank UFC for the opportunity. Because Hominick was favored, and a UFC veteran, and I'm a rookie UFC guy, I'm pretty happy about this win."

Hominick's future from here on out is uncertain. But Yagin's is as bright as the arena lights above him. Once he wipes the blood out of his eyes, he'll like what he sees.

James Head balancing fighting and engineering heading into UFC on Fuel 2

In an average day, UFC welterweight James Head will walk his dogs, work for hours for a major gas and oil company, get in a strength and conditioning workout, go back to the desk job, train for several hours, and then cheer on his St. Louis Cardinals before doing it all over again the next day.

Just reading through that schedule is exhausting, but Head, who is facing Papy Abedi at UFC on Fuel 2 Saturday in Sweden, told Cagewriter it's perfect because he never gets bored.

"It's mentally challenging and I like that. That's why I fight, because it's a mental and physical challenge. It keeps me sharp. I'm always learning things about my industry and fighting. That's how I was brought up. If I get bored with something, it's not really worth my time. I haven't gotten bored with any of the aspects of my life."

The industry is petroleum engineering, where it is Head's job to design and implement oil wells that will produce oil and natural gas. He started fighting when he was studying engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla (now called the Missouri University of Science and Technology.) When boredom hit, he tried fighting.

"The school was pretty male-dominant, so I didn't have a lot of distractions in the small town of Rolla. That's what led me to mixed martial arts. I went into a gym. It was a boxing gym, and my grandfather was a boxer. I was bought up around it. Walked into the gym, and that's where it all started."

Since then, his life has been about engineering and training MMA. For nine years, he has balanced the two demanding jobs. He likes that both challenge his mind.

"I'm cerebral in all aspects of my life, or I try to be. When it comes to training, I'm always seeking out the best training partners, the best dietitian, the best coaches. You can't be the expert in everything, you just have to have faith in the people who surround you. One of my main strengths is the mind God blessed me with."

Now he will try to take that style to Saturday's bout with Abedi. Since Abedi is from Sweden, Head will be in enemy territory. But no matter how many supporters Abedi has outside the cage, Head is confident all the fans in the world won't matter when the Octagon door closes.

"It doesn't really matter if you have all the king's horses and all the king's men on the outside of the cage. At the end of the day, it's just me and him. I'm looking forward to it."

Going Outside Your Comfort Zone Has Never Been So Comfortable

You’d Hardly Call One Of These River Trips ‘Roughing It’ My mother is not at all what you’d call the “outdoorsy type.” Yet, at 65 years old, she spent 8 days rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Yes, she even did the icky-dirty “C” word. (That’s “camping.”) The secret is — and don’t [...]

Report: Frank Trigg out at HD Net because of abuse and affair

Former UFC fighter Frank Trigg was a popular commentator for several MMA promotions on HDNet, so his absence from their broadcasts was surprising. The gossip website "The Dirty" reports his dismissal was not for business reasons.

MMA fighter Frank Trigg choked out his wife in front of his children on October 17th, 2011. They are now going through a VERY messy divorce and the children who saw the carnage are right in the middle of it. He no longer is employed at HDnet because he was sleeping with a co-worker, assistant producer, 23 year old Amy Vaughn. The company does not approve of the affair and abuse that they were made aware of soon after the incident and have chosen not to utilize his services as a commentator anymore.

HDNet did not respond to requests for comment. Trigg said he does not comment on personal business.

Trigg was 21-9 as a fighter and had a memorable loss to Matt Hughes. He fought in the UFC, Pride, Rumble on the Rock and BAMMA.

Frank Mir will now face Junior dos Santos for the belt at UFC 146

After Alistair Overeem's license was called into question by the Nevada Athletic Commission because of results of a testosterone screening, the UFC has changed the heavyweight bout at UFC 146 on May 26. Now former champion Frank Mir will face current champ Junior dos Santos for the belt. UFC president Dana White tweeted the news on Friday night.

In early April, Overeem's pre-fight random drug test raised red flags with the NAC, who will administer the May fight in Las Vegas. His testosterone levels were well above the approved levels. He is scheduled to to appear before the NAC on Tuesday.

The ongoing question after Overeem's troubles arose was who would replace him on such an important card. This is dos Santos' first title defense since beating Cain Velasquez for the belt in November. Overeem earned the title shot by defeating Brock Lesnar in December.

Though a vocal group of fans pushed for Mark Hunt, who is fighting Stefan Struve at UFC 146, Mir was always the best option. He would not have to change much to prepare for the bout since he was already scheduled to fight Cain Velasquez. Mir won his last three bouts, including a memorable submission of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140.

Nick Diaz to face world champion BJJ player Braulio Estima in grappling superbout

Nick Diaz has never been submitted in an MMA bout. While that streak may be safe as he sits out a suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission for testing positive for a banned substance after his loss to Carlos Condit, his BJJ will be tested soon. Diaz will participate in a bout with Braulio Estima. (Since it's not an MMA bout, he doesn't need a license so he's not violating the suspension.)

Estima is a highly-credentialed blackbelt in jiu-jitsu. He has won a world championship and numerous titles in BJJ and has two gold medals and a silver from the respected Abu Dhabi grappling tournament. In other words, he's one of the best around at groundwork.

Diaz and Estima will not wear gis (the traditional garment for BJJ) in their bout, making it more like an MMA bout. Diaz has eight wins by submission, but few opponents have the grappling skill of Estima. Will Diaz be able to win this bout? Tell us in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

Rashad Evans vs. Jon Jones walkout shirts end in a draw

Rashad Evans and Jon Jones have spent a whole lot of time doing interviews, training, filming "Primetime," and doing public appearances heading into UFC 145. They have been busy, so they must not have had much time to spend on their walkout shirts.

If their shirts serve as a predictor of what Saturday night's bout will be like, we are in for a major letdown. Evans' Jaco shirt and Jones' shirt from the UFC are basic and don't even feature the fighter's names. Jones is made of moisture-wicking fabric, so it costs a bit more at $44.95. Evans' shirt features environmentally-friendly ink and costs $19.95.

Jon Jones spent Easter dodging ‘bullets’ (VIDEO)

With UFC 145 and his title bout with Rashad Evans drawing near, UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones spent Easter Sunday training in an unconventional way. With the help of his brother, Baltimore Ravens defensive end Arthur Jones, Jones dodged "bullets" to get in some off day training.

OK, so they were Nerf bullets, but still. Soft foam can be tough to dodge.

Michael Chiesa continues march to honor late father on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’

Michael Chiesa is one of those rare individuals who had one of the most private, personal and emotional moments of his life played out on national television.

Chiesa was one of 32 mixed martial arts fighters chosen to appear on the first episode of Season 15 of the UFC's reality series, "The Ultimate Fighter." On March 9 at the UFC Training Center in Las Vegas, those 32 men would fight for 16 spots as cast members.

When Chiesa left his home in Spokane, Wash., a few days earlier, he did so knowing that it might be the final time he ever saw his father, Mark. The 52-year-old Mark Chiesa was fighting a losing battle with leukemia.

Michael Chiesa submitted Johnavan Vistante with a rear naked choke on March 9. When Vistante tapped, Chiesa leaped to his feet in jubilation, raced toward a camera and shouted, "That was for you, Dad!" In Spokane, his dying father gave a thumbs up and then smiled.

A few hours later, he died. Michael Chiesa flew home -- for barely 24 hours -- to pay his respects. He's been back in Las Vegas since and, tonight, will get his first chance to fight when he meets Jeremy Larsen of Team Cruz.

"I feel very good about the matchup," said Chiesa, the fifth-round pick of Team Faber. "Larsen is a tough guy and I realize that. I'm looking to be the better fighter in all aspects and come out with a finish."

He said that having to break camp, even temporarily, didn't impact him. Once the fighters make the show, they're not allowed any contact with the outside world for the duration. They have no television, no Internet, no newspapers and they normally aren't allowed to leave the house where their every move is filmed. In Chiesa's case, UFC president Dana White made an exception to allow him to fly home to Spokane, Wash., to allow him to attend a service for his father.

Chiesa said leaving didn't put him behind the other fighters. Team Faber coach Urijah Faber said that if Daron Cruickshank had won the first week, he would have picked the Chiesa-Larsen matchup for Week 2.

"Chiesa is ready and he's a very hungry guy," Faber said. "He's highly motivated and I love this matchup for him. I think he has a big edge in grappling."

Chiesa said he'll fight as he always does and work to finish the fight. He noted that Larsen is resilient and was able to withstand several bad positions in his qualifying fight to get into the house.

"He's shown he can weather the storm, so I have to be aware of that, but I will go for the finish like I always have," Chiesa said. "If you look at my fights, you see I finish a lot. It's just how I like to go and I'm always looking for a way to end it."
