Alcantara, Pyle and Arantes early winners at UFC 142

The UFC returned to Brazil on Saturday night for UFC 142. Two decisions and a quick knockout started off the card in Rio de Janeiro.

Pyle's quick win

Mike Pyle made quick work of Ricardo Funch with a right hand, a nasty knee and ground and pound to end their bout at 1:22 in the first round.

After the bouts, Pyle put out a warning to other welterweights.

"That's how I'm going to look every single time I step in the Octagon!"

Yuri Alcantara made the hometown crowd happy with a 30-27, 29-28, 30-27 decision over Michihiro Omigawa.

Alcantara started with a knee from the bell, and stung Omigawa with several strikes after. Late in the first, Alcantara swarmed with big strikes, including a spinning back elbow that knocked Omigawa to his knees. Omigawa remained calm and used his judo skills to reverse position and end up on top. Alcantara turned stretched out Omigawa in an armbar, but Omigawa was saved by the bell. A bit of controversy ensued as there was a question on if Omigawa tapped, but he didn't and the bout continued.

In the second round, Alcantara started with great striking and then got full mount. He took Omigawa's back, but wasn't able sink in a choke. Alcantara had the edge in the second round, but Omigawa came back looking fresh in the third round.

Though Omigawa still had movement, he ate a ton of punches in the third round. With 1:45 left in the fight, Omigawa easily got a takedown and was able to land punches from the guard. They were stood up with 15 seconds left in the bout, and Alcantara managed a takedown in the final seconds.

Arantes starts card off with a win

Felipe Arantes earned his first UFC victory with a decision over Antonio Carvalho. It was a close match until Arantes took Carvalho down late in the third and used elbows to beat up Carvalho and seal the fight in his favor. The judges saw it 29-28 on all three cards for Arantes.

Chad Mendes finding plenty of love from Brazilian fans before UFC 142

When the UFC hit Brazil in August for UFC 134, the crowd was raucous, to say the least. They were so excited to see their fighters, they cheered, chanted, and threw beer through the duration of the card. This time around, that environment might be intimidating for an American fighter facing one of a beloved Brazilian fighter.

Chad Mendes has not faced any hostility since arriving in Rio de Janeiro earlier this week to fight Jose Aldo Jr. In fact, he's found a warm reception.

"I was surprised by how supportive the fans were. I didn't expect to receive the cheers and I appreciated it," Mendes said at today's press conference in Rio.

"I think the fans realize how important this fight is for the featherweight division, for the UFC and for the sport. I'm ready to go and I know Jose is. I can't wait to do this."

Their fight for the UFC's featherweight belt is a match-up between two young guns who are known for very different skills. Champion Aldo has snapping kicks and speed in his striking. Mendes was a NCAA Division I finalist in wrestling and uses those skills in his fights.

[Don't miss the action: Watch UFC 142 live on Y! Sports]

Mendes says that he has prepared for Aldo's advantages.

"We've worked on that in camp, particularly in getting ready for his striking. Without giving away too much strategy, I am really confident in my ability to take this fight where I want it. This is the moment I've been waiting for since I was a kid. A few years ago, I'd never fought outside of California. Saturday, I'm walking into the Octagon in Rio and I'm planning on leaving with the UFC featherweight title."

So who will walk away with the UFC featherweight belt? Will Aldo defend the belt for the fifth straight time, or will Mendes keep his record unblemished? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

UFC 142: Mike Pyle is fired up to fight in front of hostile crowd

Mike Pyle has fought all over the world, but even he admits tomorrow night at UFC 142, Rio de Janeiro could be unlike anything he's ever seen.

"We're fighting and we have to fight other countryman on their soil. That makes it fun. Get out there in some hostile territory," Pyle told ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "It's kind of different. You don't get booed and looked at in strange ways at home. It's cool. Makes me feel like a super villain."

Pyle won't be walking through the Rio crowd with complete unfamiliarity. He cornerd Forrest Griffin back at UFC 134 and saw how intense the Brazilians were that night.

"The energy was ... I just got chill bumps just now thinking about that night when we walked out, how intense the crowd was," Pyle said. "They were into it dude. I can't even put it into words. It was awesome."

Pyle, 36, has fought in Denmark, Russia and the U.K. This will be his first time in Brazil and he's facing Bahia, Brazil native Ricardo Funch. The American is coming off a quick loss against Rory MacDonald. He made sure to make some changes to get back on the right track.

Pyle added a new jiu-jitsu coach, Mitch Coats and Nate Pettit, who's serving as his main coach.

Pineda and Denis with awesome UFC debuts on UFC on FX 1 undercard

Don't be fooled by records in MMA. It's all about quality of competition.

Pat Schilling learned that tonight in Nashville. The 5-0 fighter got steamrolled by Daniel Pineda. Pineda, a seven-loss fighter, stormed across the cage and walked through Schilling to post a victory in his UFC debut in just 97 seconds.

With 4:09 left in the round, Pineda (16-7, 1-0 UFC) got things rolling with a short left. He grabbed Schilling and scored an easy takedown. Just six seconds later, he mounted the stunned Schilling. Pineda unloaded with some big shots to Schilling's forehead, who turned to give his back with 3:53 left. Eventually Schilling stood up with Pineda on his back. That only made it easier to slap on the rear-naked choke. Referee Mario Yamasaki saved Schilling a few seconds later after it went back down to the ground.

Denis brutalizes Sandoval in 22-second win

Who could pen a better script for a UFC debut, than what Nick Denis produced on the UFC on FX 1 undercard?

The Canadian let his hands go in the opening seconds then backed it up with four vicious standing elbows to drop Joseph Sandoval and post a win in just 22 seconds in the opener of the prelims on FUEL TV.

Denis (11-2, 1-0 UFC) showed good boxing early and landed a big right just 12 seconds in. When he got a hold of Sandoval's head in a thai clinch, the smaller American was in big trouble. Sandoval has made two trips to the Octagon and dropped both fights in a combined 99 seconds.

Camoes won't let debutants go 3-for-3, Brazilian subs Hayden

Tommy Hayden was holding his own for a while, but he was stepping up to another level tonight in Fabricio Camoes.

Camoes withstood an early onslaught from the UFC rookie. Hayden got a little too grapple-happy, had his back taken and had to tap to a nasty rear-naked choke at the 4:03 mark of the first round in fight No. 3 of the night.

Camoes hit the deck three times early in the fight. Two times, he was on his knees and another on his back, but Hayden couldn't settle him. Hayden got on top again with 2:35 left, but Camoes eventually scrambled to score a sweep and take top control.

After a few seconds, he stood up and launched himself back on top landing a hammerfist. Camoes eventually got Hayden's back where he began to work the finishing choke.

With just over a minute left in the round, Hayden was shot. The choke was tight. It appeared he actually tapped twice before referee Josh Rosenthal honored a third tap to end the fight.

Hayden, 25, dropped the first fight of career after an 8-0 start. Camoes (14-6-1) evened his UFC mark at 1-1-1.

Rio crowd explodes as Jose Aldo posts crazy finish of Chad Mendes at UFC 142

So much for the lack of finishes from Jose Aldo. The UFC's featherweight champ ended the "Rocky IV" dreams of Chad Mendes with a big knee and two brutal punches.

At the end of the first round, the champ beat the clock by landing a vicious knee. Mendes went limp and fell to his back where he ate two more punches squarely to the face. Referee Mario Yamasaki stopped things at the 4:59 mark of the first round in the main event of UFC 142 in Rio de Janeiro.

Aldo can be a lunatic sometimes when it comes to the post-fight celebration. Tonight, he set a new standard.

At the end of the fight, the second the Octagon door opened, he flew through it running into the crowd. In what was a near riot-like scene as the fans went crazy on Aldo. He was eventually carried on their shoulders and got back into the cage after a few minutes.

Aldo (21-1, 3-0 UFC) runs his win streak to 14 straight. He hasn't lost a fight since 2005.

"Jose is a great champion. I wanted keep the pressure on and close the distance and get my hands on him," Mendes said. He's got great takedown defense and footwork. Watching a lot of his fights, I knew it would be tough to take him down. He was the better man."

Mendes, a former elite college wrestler, had to get the fight to the ground to give himself a shot. Aldo was simply too big and too athletic. The champ stuffed all five of Mendes' takedown attempts.

In between those tries, Mendes (11-1) ate kick after kick on his lead leg. It took roughly three minutes for the challenger to switch stances to protect that leg.

With just under a minute left in the round, Mendes actually got into a favorable position. He had standing back control and delivered some solid knees to the back of Aldo's legs. Aldo freed himself with eight seconds left in the round. Mendes turned, ducked his head and tried to shoot forward for another takedown. Aldo's reaction time was ridiculous as he landed a quick left knee. Mendes fell to his back where he ate two huge punches to force the stoppage.

UFC on FX Live Blog: Mike Easton vs. Jared Papazian Updates

Filed under:

This is the UFC on FX live blog for Mike Easton vs. Jared Papazian, a bantamweight bout on tonight's main card from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.

Easton (11-1) won his UFC debut last October with a second-round TKO over Byron Bloodworth. Papazian (14-6), coming off a stint as King of the Cage bantamweight champion, is making his UFC debut.

The live blog is below.

Mario Yamasaki is the referee.

Round 1: Easton and Papazian collide into a half-Muay Thai clinch and they perform a bantamweight version of Frye vs. Takayama. Easton presses Papazian against the cage. Papazian connects on a short elbow and reverses Easton. Easton tries knees in clinch. The bantamweights are in a very active battle for position in clinch. But with neither fighter close to landing a big shot or takedown, Yamasaki separates them. They trade leg kicks. Papazian catches a leg kick but isn't able to attempt the takedown. Papazian swings for the fences. Easton keeps a tight boxing defense with hands high and chin tucked. Easton misses on a spinning back kick to the delight of the crowd. Easton slams a kick into the left leg of Papazian. They exchange punches in clinch again to close an active first round. Very close round. Slight edge to Easton. MMA Fighting scores the first round 10-9 for Easton.

Round 2: Easton stalks and they're both eyeing a knockout. Easton lands a leg kick and straight right. They clinch. Easton gains double underhooks but Papazian digs with his right arm and reverses Easton against the cage. Yamasaki separates them with around 2:20 to go. Papazian lands a right and then a nice back kick glances the body of Easton. They clinch again and this time Easton lands a trip takedown into Papazian's halfguard. Easton soon after passes to side. Papazian escapes to halfguard and then to his feet as they return to clinch. Papazian pushes Easton's head away to separate. Easton stalks. Papazian shoots but Easton finishes on top. It looks like Papazian might have pulled guard or Easton reversed. MMA Fighting scores the second 10-9 for Easton.

Round 3: Easton's leg kick is almost caught. They exchange very fast punches. But there's no way they can keep that pace without someone going down and they clinch. Yamasaki separates them. Papazian takes a short breather as his body language tells Yamasaki he was kneed low. After the brief timeout, they clinch and then separate. They box in the pocket. Both fighters are landing decent shots. Easton connects a nice right. Papazian battles back. Easton responds with a left hook. We're probably going to need CompuStrike especially for this round. Somehow neither fighter has been stunned, though. Easton grabs the Muay Thai clinch with just over two minutes left. Papazian connects on a number of jabs. Easton trips Papazian, but Papazian quickly recovers. More closed-distance boxing to close the fight. Both fighters deserve a shot at Fight of the Night for this gutsy performance. MMA Fighting scores the third round 10-9 for Easton. Easton should win at least two of the rounds. The first was super close.

Mike Easton wins via majority decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-29)
