UFC on Fox 2 Results: Dunham Cuts Down Lentz, Russow Outpoints Einemo on Prelims

Evan Dunham stopped Nik Lentz to cap off the preliminary card at Saturday's UFC on Fox 2 event in Chicago, as a doctor ended the lightweight matchup after two rounds due to a cut and swelling under Lentz' eye.

Chicago police officer Mike Russow was also victorious on the prelims as he notched a unanimous decision over fellow heavyweight John-Olav Einemo.

Brenneman and Nurmagomedov winners at UFC on FX 1

Charlie Brenneman and Khabib Nurmagomedov walked away from UFC on FX 1 winners. Brenneman took a decision, while Nurmagomedov had an impressive, late submission.

Brenneman grapples his way to a win

Charlie Brenneman took the win over Daniel Roberts with a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 decision.

Roberts started the first round strong with a bevy of punches, and Brenneman responded with a takedown. Roberts grabbed a guillotine, but wasn't in a good position to finish him off. Brenneman popped  his head out, and controlled Roberts. He moved into side control and maneuvered Roberts into a crucifix hold, landing several punches to Roberts' head along the way. Several appeared to hit the back of Roberts' head, but referee Herb Dean did not see the illegal strikes.

The second round started with another Brenneman takedown. Again, Brenneman worked Roberts into a crucifix. This time, he landed more strikes to Roberts' face. Roberts worked his way out from the crucifix, but Brenneman remained in control until they were stood up with 1:30. In the final minute, Brenneman tried for another takedown, and Roberts used the opportunity to lock Brenneman into a triangle choke with seconds left in the round. Though a submission appeared close, Brenneman was saved by the round ending.

The third verse was the same as the first: Brenneman took Roberts down and moved Roberts into side control. Again, Brenneman landed several strikes, but didn't do much damage to Roberts' face. Roberts hit another last-minute submission. This time, it was a Kimura. Again, Brenneman was saved by the end of the round.

Nurmagomedov wins debut

Khabib Nurmagomedov won his UFC debut with a third round rear naked choke of Kamal Shalorus.

Shalorus stalked Nurmagomedov down in the first round. Shalorus wobbled Nurmagomedov, but it was Nurmagomedov's counter that changed the tenor of the fight. His uppercut knocked Shalorus to the ground. Though Shalorus was able to avoid the knockout, Nurmagomedov controlled Shalorus on the ground. At the 45-second mark, Shalorus got back to his feet and swung wildly at Nurmagomedov.  Somehow, the two made it to the end of the round.

In the second, Nurmagomedov caught Shalorus' head when he shot in for a takedown. Nurmagomedov ended on top. They were stood up for a lack of activity around the three-minute mark, and Nurmagomedov got another takedown. Again, they were stood up. Nurmagomedov showed strong striking just before the horn sounded to end the round.

Nurmagomedov again took down Shalorus in the third round. Shalorus tried for a guillotine, but couldn't hold on. When Shalorus lost the submission attempt, Nurmagomedov had full mount. Shalorus flipped over, but gave up his neck. Nurmagomedov grabbed a rear naked choke, causing Shalorus to tap at

If Round 1 is the war of words, Phil Davis leads 10-8 over Rashad Evans

CHICAGO -- In most interviews Phil Davis comes off as a reserved young man. He's not out to ruffle any feathers, but those of us who've had a chance to speak to him repeatedly always knew there was a potential media darling behind that conservative facade.

In the lead-up to Saturday's UFC on Fox 2 card, Rashad Evans has brought out the beast in Davis and the former UFC light heavyweight hasn't reacted too well.

It started last week when Evans flipped out on Davis calling him a "boy." Yesterday during the UFC on Fox 2 prefight press conference, Evans shook his head, appeared annoyed and even looked flustered on several occasions.

[Related: UFC on Fox 2 carries huge implications for blockbuster fights]

As the banter began, Evans tried to play it cool.

"For the most part, I've got nothing against Phil, but you we've got a fight so I've got a lot against him right now. It's personal, but not really PERSONAL personal," said Evans, who had heated prefight words with previous opponents like Tito Ortiz and Quinton Jackson.

Evans got irked when the issue of college wrestling came up. Phil Davis, a more accomplished NCAA star at Penn State than Evans was at Michigan State, laughed when someone asked if his opponent could beat him in a straight wrestling match. Evans kept saying "your technique is trash."

Then Davis was asked about missing the opportunity to face Evans back in August in Philadelphia. Davis quickly pointed out that he didn't get to fight in front of his friends and family from nearby Harrisburg, Pa. Evans took issue with the fact that Davis didn't say he was sad to lose out on the opportunity to fight him. Davis fired back, "Nobody heard me say that!"

Evans snapped again when Davis explained his understanding of what the result of a win could be, a possible title shot against Jon Jones.

"The winner of this fight will fight for the title, but in the event that I hit him too hard and break my hand ... it might lead to somebody else getting the title shot first," said Davis.

"You don't punch nobody hard. Phil can't hit. Phil punches with his hands open and everything," Evans said. "He couldn't bust a grape. You look like Arsenio Hall."

Davis laughed.

"Give him a hand y'all. Give him a hand," said Davis.

That opened the door for a female fan to ask Davis whether he looked more like Hall or NBA star Dwight Howard? Davis handled it gracefully as he done throughout the lead-up to Saturday's tilt. We'll see if his poise remains intact in the fight. Either way, this week showed he'll be a valuable asset on main cards for years to come in the UFC.

UFC on Fox 2 Results: Evans Dominates Davis to Set Up Showdown with Jon Jones

Rashad Evans dominated Phil Davis from start to finish to score a unanimous decision in the main event of UFC on Fox 2 and set up a showdown with rival UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in April if he's injury-free.

Chael Sonnen edged Michael Bisping in the co-main event to earn a rematch with middleweight champion Anderson Silva, while Chris Weidman also topped Demian Maia on the main card.

Video: Jon Jones using kicks for different purpose in Fox ad

Just after the NFC championship game went to the half Sunday, Fox used its rather large, NFL playoff platform to get viewers excited for Saturday's "UFC on Fox" fights. Instead of showing another ad with fight highlights with a popular, adrenaline-pumping song playing, it showed UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones using his kicks for a slightly different purpose.

The ad didn't fit what MMA fans are used to, and that's the point. This ad wasn't for people who already had planned to tune into Saturday's bouts. The ad was to show the general public that fighters are men with families and a sense of humor. (Jones later tweeted that the young girl in the ad is not his daughter.)

A confident Dana White defends policy of confidentiality on fighter pay and welcomes government scrutiny

CHICAGO -- Dana White has his mind made up. You're never going to know what UFC fighters truly make and that's just the way it has to be.

"So just because you don't know everything, you don't have to know anything, and to be honest with you? It's none of your [expletive] business how much these guys are making. They're making a lot of money. [...] How much money is none of your business. I'm not asking how much money you're making," said White (3:10 mark).

White believes that the salary information, so readily available in the other pro sports has ruined things for the athletes. He pointed to the recent $214 million megadeal inked by Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder.

"His whole life is going to change. He thought it was bad before with the (expletive) he had going on in his life? Everybody and their mother is coming after that 214," White said (2:10 mark). "Believe me when I tell you. Mark my words, Prince Fielder talk to me in five years and tell me what it was like when the news put out there that you were making $214 million dollars. I'm not going to do that to my guys."

The UFC often gets a bad rap for fighter pay because the only numbers revealed are those given to state commissions. The promotion beefs up the pay with behind-the-scenes discretionary and pay-per-view bonuses. White is often asked if all the complaints about pay would go away if Zuffa simply revealed all the details.

"Even when we sat down and had that first FOX meeting, the guys at FOX were like, holy [expletive]! They're like, 'Why don't you plaster this everywhere? This is the thing that will put you guys over the top. This is the thing that people love to see and talk about. Look at Mike Tyson.' And I said, 'Yeah, look at Mike Tyson,'" White said. "I've had these conversations with Mike. Mike said that when his money was reported, his [expletive] life was miserable. I'm not doing it."

Some believe the UFC's reluctance to be more transparent prompted the Federal Trade Commission to open an anti-trust violation investigation to look into Zuffa's practices.

"My understanding is that yes [the FTC has] opened a non-public investigation based on the acquisition we made of Strikeforce," said UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyel said this is a sign of awful things to come for the UFC.

The FTC vs. the UFC? That's a heavyweight fight. That's Dana White's worst nightmare. The FTC looks for antitrust violations, picking apart monopolies as the unfair bullies they are -- and as far as I'm concerned, the UFC is guilty as charged.

The story set off White.

"There was guy yesterday, he wrote this story and you could tell this thing was like 'I want some attention. I want some attention. Maybe he'll get mad and say some [expletive].' [...] When we get stories written about us like that, I know it seems like I get crazy and come off too personal ... well, [expletive] yeah it's personal! What you're saying is untrue," said White (0:51 mark).

White said everything about the promotion is on the up and up.

"If the government wants to come in and look inside and take a peak and look around, they're more than welcome," White said. "Many of you have heard stories and all kinds of things ... mark my [expletive] words right here, right now, today ... we're not going anywhere. And everything we say is true."

As far as we know the FTC is still looking at Zuffa. White certainly came off sounding very confident nothing will come from the investigation.

White pointed out that there is no sport that has been more heavily scrutinized by governments all levels. The promotion has survived and thrived to become what White called the best sports story of the last 50 years.

Post-Fight Thoughts After UFC on FOX 2

Filed under:

The sky is not falling.

The doomsdayers always seem to panic whenever a UFC show does not produce a series of heart-racing moments, and UFC on FOX 2 certainly fell a little flat, leading to heavy criticism and downright concern about the future of the FOX deal.

Relax. FOX is well aware that some fights are going to blow you away, and others will make you want to walk away. That's sports. They didn't lock in a seven-year deal with the thought of divorcing after their first official show under the terms of the deal. This is still a new sports property for them, and there is plenty of room to grow for both sides.

Adjustments will be made, and fights will deliver.

Remember, we have Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller on tap for UFC on FOX 3 in May. There's no way that fight doesn't deliver.

Until then, here are my thoughts on storylines stemming from the UFC's second outing on network TV...

Historic Run
Jon Jones had a banner 2011, capturing the title and finishing all four of his fights. The virtuoso performance led many to wonder what he could possibly do for an encore, and now we have our answer. Jones has Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson waiting to fight him.

Think about this: Jones has the possibility of going through Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Evans and Henderson consecutively. If he accomplishes it, it would no doubt be the most impressive five-fight run in MMA history.

And let it be said, giving Evans the first shot at Jones before Henderson is the right call. Evans has been the No. 1 contender in waiting for about 18 months, since beating Jackson back in May 2010. He's waited long enough. Even though Henderson is 41 years old and has less time remaining in his career than Evans, he wasn't even in the UFC when Evans became the top contender. He was still in Strikeforce at the time.

Henderson should certainly get the chance to fight the Evans-Jones winner, but given the UFC schedule, he'll likely be offered another fight before it.

Stepping Back
It's safe to say that Phil Davis wasn't quite ready for the jump up to elite opponent level, struggling in a decision loss to Evans. Davis remains a wildly gifted talent, but seems to lack conviction in some of his own abilities. He didn't fully commit to his punches, often moving backward as he threw, and that allowed Evans to fire off his own strikes with little to fear.

Davis does throw strong kicks, but until he learns to let his hands go -- a skill that will complement his wrestling -- he won't reach his optimum potential.

Sonnen-Silva II
Chael Sonnen had some trouble with Michael Bisping on the way to a unanimous decision that will set up a rematch with Anderson Silva, likely this summer in Brazil. The less-than-stellar performance sent his stock downward in the eyes of many, who suggest that it will somehow carry over into his fight with Silva.

There's no correlation between the two fights. Bisping has always boasted very good takedown defense and even when he's gotten taken down, he tends to pop back up to his feet quickly. Silva's takedown defense is average, and when he gets taken down, he looks for submissions instead of trying to get to his feet. Sonnen is much more likely to take him down and keep him down for long stretches, just like the first fight, mainly because Silva is often content to work from his back, where he's dangerous.

That said, the rematch -- like the original -- is likely to come down to whether Sonnen can stay away from a fight-ending submission.

%VIRTUAL-Gallery-145874%

MiddleMan
For a long time, I have asked, where is the next great middleweight? In a story from last year, I suggested Chris Weidman could be that man.

On Saturday, Weidman defeated Maia in a workmanlike decision. While he didn't steal the headlines away from Evans or Sonnen, Weidman's win on 11 days' notice sends the message that he's a force to be reckoned with. He had to cut from 217 to 185. He was faced with fighting a southpaw. His opponent was one of MMA's submission masters. Weidman conquered all these obstacles in his path, and that says plenty about his mental and physical makeup.

Weidman has shown advancing striking skills to go with his excellent wrestling and ground game. Barring an injury, there's no question that he'll be knocking on the door of top contenders in the division ASAP.

Another first
Charles Oliveira made his featherweight debut memorable, becoming the first UFC fighter in history to score a calf slicer submission. Oliveira is an aggressive, attacking offensive fighter, so it's no surprise that he'd pull off something so bold and rare. Now it's worth watching to see if he becomes a real factor in the division.

Damned if you do...
Nik Lentz used to receive a ton of criticism for fighting conservatively, but the approach led to a 15-fight unbeaten stretch from 2007-2011. The constant slams from fans and media caused Lentz to reconsider his approach, and his more wide open style has led to two losses in a row. The upside: he earned a $65,000 bonus for Fight of the Night. The downside: he's now officially on the cut watch list.

Sub of the Night locked up? Oliveira brilliant in finish of Wisely at UFC on Fox 2

CHICAGO -- Eric Wisely learned a new submission term - the calf slicer. Unfortunately, it was Wisely's calf, knee and thigh being shredded by Charles Oliveira.

In his featherweight debut, Oliveira showed off some nifty scrambling and submission skills in finishing the American at the 1:53 mark of the first round. The UFC's Tom Gerbasi said it was the first cal slicer finish in the history of the promotion.

Oliveira (15-2, 3-2 UFC, 1 NC) is the leading candidate for the Submission of the Night bonus. That should be good for somewhere between $65,000 and $75,000.

"It felt amazing to walk out and hear the energy of the crowd here in Chicago. I was extremely confident and proud going into this fight and I knew that God would be with me," Oliveira said. "I have practiced my submissions endlessly and it was easy to look for that opportunity to finish the fight. I am ready for the next challenge inside the Octagon."

Oliveira looked solid in all aspects, most importantly the bounce in his step. This was the 22-year-old's first fight down at 145 pounds. The Brazilian's length at 5-foot-10 gave Wisely trouble from the start. He just couldn't get inside on Oliveira.

Wisely (19-7) flopped to his back after eating a few good punches and a kick. From there, Oliveira patiently hovered above looking to land some good shots. He finally grabbed a leg and dropped back to work on a heel hook. It was tight, but Wisely escaped serious damage. He wasn't out of it. Oliveira tried to reset the position.

Wisely scrambled to get to his hand and knees with his back facing Oliveira. That's when the Brazilian went into improvise-mode, jumped on Wisely's back and dropped back down. But he did so without releasing Wisely's left leg. He cranked and the pressure on Wisely's leg was incredible. He tapped with his right hand a couple. the referee missed it. He groaned in agony as he tapped again with the left. The fight was over. Wisely (19-7, 0-1 UFC) loses his promotional debut.

"I've got to work on a few things to improve my overall game. With these Brazilian jiu-jitsu guys, I've got to be a little quicker all around. That might have been enough to have kept me from getting caught and we might be looking at an entirely different outcome," said Wisely.

Swanson posts a beautiful knockout of Roop

Cub Swanson's hands haven't always been kind to him. Tonight, they paid dividends big time.

Swanson scored a huge second-round knockout with a perfectly placed right hand on George Roop's chin. Swanson drilled Roop with an overhand right. The impact sent Roop's mouthpiece flying into the cage and he went down in a heap. A surprised Swanson jumped on top to throw 10 more unanswered punches and the fight was stopped at 2:23 of the second.

"That shot just connected and rocked him and put him on his back. I wanted to make sure that I had finished it because it all happened so fast. I'm going to take about two weeks off and see how I feel. I might be looking to get back in here pretty quickly after a win like this," said Swanson.

Swanson (16-5, 1-1 UFC) appeared to a get a little emotional during the immediate aftermath of the victory. It's been rough run the last few years for Swanson who's battled hand issue after hand issue. Because of injuries, he's only fought two times since Aug. of 2010.

"We had some pretty good action when the match started and I was using my range to gain the advantage. I'm really not sure what happened because it really just happened to fast. He hit me with something that I didn't see coming at all," said Roop.

Seven Ways of Looking at UFC on FOX 2

Filed under:

The UFC returns to network TV with the UFC on FOX 2 tonight in Chicago, and there are plenty of questions, concerns, predictions and pointless musings to occupy us until then. Here are seven of them, in no particular order.

I. Will the average network TV viewer even know what to make of this Chael Sonnen character? Imagine you're John Q. Public, flipping through the channels on a Saturday night in search of one of those shows where people either sing or dance or lose weight, and instead you stumble upon this guy with the jawline talking like a slightly more coherent Ric Flair in his pre-fight interview. Then he goes out and climbs in a cage to fight some guy who sounds like the chimney sweep from Mary Poppins, all while the dude from Fear Factor shouts into a microphone about how exciting it is. If you've never seen this before, would you have any clue what to make of it? Would you even know whether it was real? Would you keep watching it in an effort to figure it out? Or would you conclude that this is the latest terrifying development in a modern world that becomes more alien to you with each new day, and resolve to keep flipping through the channels until you find some calming program about whales and cheetahs and crap? I can honestly say that I have no idea how some first-time viewers will solve this little crisis, but I'm betting that it will result in some hilarious phone calls and emails to younger, hipper relations as they attempt to figure it all out.

II. Consider the appearance of Phil Davis' Penn State singlet at Friday's weigh-ins as a friendly reminder to Rashad Evans.
Let Yahoo's resident wrestling nerd, Maggie Hendricks, explain:

So that singlet is Penn State's championship singlet, one that only gets broken out if a guy wrestles in the finals. Since Davis wrestled in the NCAA finals twice, he has at least one. Most schools have them, but PSU's is very recognizable because they don't have a ton of singlet options, like other schools. As a fellow Big 10er, Evans would know that. Wearing that one, and not Penn State's more traditional dark blue singlet, was a sly way of Davis saying, "Yes, I am the better wrestler."

Somewhere in the darkest room of his mind -- likely one he doesn't like to enter -- Evans probably knows that Davis would beat him in a wrestling match. He also knows that they aren't scheduled for a wrestling match on Saturday night, as does Davis. It's just a question of which of them is using this wrestler jock nonsense as a head game, and which is starting to buy into it.

III. Ratings-wise, the UFC has a lot riding on a bunch of grapplers.
Of the six fighters slated for the FOX portion of the fight card, only Michael Bisping cannot be fairly described as a ground specialist, and most people expect that to be his undoing in this fight. That sets us up for a different kind of night than the first UFC on FOX event, where viewers were treated to a microwave fight between two hard-hitting heavyweights. Anybody can understand big guys punching each other in the head, but will the network TV audience appreciate the jiu-jitsu prowess of Demian Maia or the tricky takedowns of Chael Sonnen? Ideally, ratings should climb over the course of the two-hour broadcast as we near the main event, but that may depend on what kind of show the first two fights put on, and how viewers respond. Is America ready to appreciate technical grappling? Will they geek out over a half-guard sweep and call all their friends to tell them to put on FOX right now? I'm not so sure. But again, this is what FOX signed up for. Now they're going to get it.

IV. Have you complained to your cable provider about not carrying FUEL TV yet?
That's where tonight's UFC prelims will be broadcast, and yet it's still available in just a fraction of the homes that Spike TV is. That's caused some griping from fans who don't get FUEL, which might be precisely the point. Back when the UFC was negotiating a new TV deal, a Spike TV executive I spoke with shrugged off the possibility of reaching a new agreement with the UFC, saying, "The UFC wants their own channel." With FUEL -- an obscure cable network with programming that seems to consist of little more than kids on snowboards doing their best to act "extreme" -- they sort of have it. Maybe that alone will convince some people to actually care that it isn't an option with their cable provider.

V. February 21, 2009. That's the last time Demian Maia submitted an opponent in an MMA fight. That opponent just happened to be Chael Sonnen, and the triangle choke finish netted Maia his fourth Submission of the Night bonus. Since then Maia has lost two fights by decision and one by knockout. He's also won four fights by decision, but used his jiu-jitsu sparingly in all those efforts. Has the competition just gotten that much better, or has Maia turned away from the skills that got him here in an effort to become more well-rounded? Probably a little of both. But if Maia could submit Sonnen and make it look easy, he could probably do the same to many, many others.

VI. Don't look now, but Mike Russow is undefeated in the UFC. How did this happen? Well, he edged out Justin McCully in his UFC debut, then took a tremendous beating from Todd Duffee before landing the one magical punch that changed everything. Finally, he got a doctor's stoppage win over Jon Madsen last spring, making him a perfect 3-0. That makes Russow perhaps the best, least heralded heavyweight on the roster -- at least on paper. It should be interesting to see how long that lasts.

VII. Chris Weidman did it. He dropped 32 pounds in 11 days and got himself ready to take on the biggest opportunity of his young career. My question is, in doing that, did he leave himself any time and energy to prepare for the fighting portion of this bout? Granted, he's a professional and he's in the gym all the time -- I get that. But Maia can be a tricky guy to prepare for. If you have to put so much effort into losing all that weight, you might leave yourself very little opportunity to work on things like game plan and strategy. That's not to say he can't win on the skills he had when he got the call from the UFC. It just means he probably didn't have a chance to add any more arrows to the quiver.

Dana White Doesn't Buy the 'Tainted Supplement' Excuse

Filed under:

CHICAGO -- After King Mo Lawal tested positive for a banned steroid this month, he said he believed the substance got into his system because it was in a supplement that he legally purchased over the counter.

UFC President Dana White says that excuse isn't good enough.

White said Thursday that he thinks all professional athletes need to know for sure what they're putting in their systems, and that any fighter who tests positive for a banned substance needs to deal with the consequences, regardless of the reason.

"If you get caught doing something, admit you did it," White said. "The whole 'Somebody put something in my system that I didn't know about?' I mean, who here lets someone put s--t inside them that you don't know what it is? If you go to the doctor and he gives you a pill, 'Doc, what am I taking this for?'"

White said he wishes fighters who test positive for performance-enhancing drugs would simply admit that they were trying to gain an unfair advantage, rather than plead ignorance about the contents of the supplements they were taking.

"I don't buy that s--t," White said. "Own up to what you did. Listen, it's out there, it happens, and sometimes everybody makes mistakes."

White said he hopes the UFC's new policy of testing all new fighters at the time they sign their first UFC contracts will deter young mixed martial artists from taking performance-enhancing drugs.

"The up-and-coming guys, you're already talented, you're already fast, you're already strong, do not ruin your career by taking this junk that will affect you for the rest of your life," White said.

And as for the established fighters who test positive and say they didn't know the ingredients of the supplements they were taking? White doesn't want to hear it.

"I don't buy it," White said. "Anybody that's ever said that they didn't know what's being put in their body is full of s--t."

Pineda and Denis with awesome UFC debuts on UFC on FX 1 undercard

Don't be fooled by records in MMA. It's all about quality of competition.

Pat Schilling learned that tonight in Nashville. The 5-0 fighter got steamrolled by Daniel Pineda. Pineda, a seven-loss fighter, stormed across the cage and walked through Schilling to post a victory in his UFC debut in just 97 seconds.

With 4:09 left in the round, Pineda (16-7, 1-0 UFC) got things rolling with a short left. He grabbed Schilling and scored an easy takedown. Just six seconds later, he mounted the stunned Schilling. Pineda unloaded with some big shots to Schilling's forehead, who turned to give his back with 3:53 left. Eventually Schilling stood up with Pineda on his back. That only made it easier to slap on the rear-naked choke. Referee Mario Yamasaki saved Schilling a few seconds later after it went back down to the ground.

Denis brutalizes Sandoval in 22-second win

Who could pen a better script for a UFC debut, than what Nick Denis produced on the UFC on FX 1 undercard?

The Canadian let his hands go in the opening seconds then backed it up with four vicious standing elbows to drop Joseph Sandoval and post a win in just 22 seconds in the opener of the prelims on FUEL TV.

Denis (11-2, 1-0 UFC) showed good boxing early and landed a big right just 12 seconds in. When he got a hold of Sandoval's head in a thai clinch, the smaller American was in big trouble. Sandoval has made two trips to the Octagon and dropped both fights in a combined 99 seconds.

Camoes won't let debutants go 3-for-3, Brazilian subs Hayden

Tommy Hayden was holding his own for a while, but he was stepping up to another level tonight in Fabricio Camoes.

Camoes withstood an early onslaught from the UFC rookie. Hayden got a little too grapple-happy, had his back taken and had to tap to a nasty rear-naked choke at the 4:03 mark of the first round in fight No. 3 of the night.

Camoes hit the deck three times early in the fight. Two times, he was on his knees and another on his back, but Hayden couldn't settle him. Hayden got on top again with 2:35 left, but Camoes eventually scrambled to score a sweep and take top control.

After a few seconds, he stood up and launched himself back on top landing a hammerfist. Camoes eventually got Hayden's back where he began to work the finishing choke.

With just over a minute left in the round, Hayden was shot. The choke was tight. It appeared he actually tapped twice before referee Josh Rosenthal honored a third tap to end the fight.

Hayden, 25, dropped the first fight of career after an 8-0 start. Camoes (14-6-1) evened his UFC mark at 1-1-1.

Quinton Jackson reacts to positive steroid test from ‘King Mo’

It was just two weeks ago that Muhammed Lawal was calling Quinton Jackson washed up and a B-level actor.

Jackson didn't say too much since, but he did sit down for an interview yesterday which happened to be perfectly timed with the news released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that "King Mo" tested positive for an anabolic steroid following his Strikeforce fight.

"I feel that any fighter who has to use steroids to go in the cage and fight somebody is not a true fighter somebody just blatantly taking anabolical steroids to get in the cage is a sad case," said Jackson.

Jackson said Lawal's recent woes are to be expected.

"He talk a big game and calling people bums, it's just karma. Look at him. He's a very cocky individual," said Jackson.

Lawal tested positive for Drostanolone, but denied using any illegal substances.

Jackson shows a good sense of humor later in the interview over the fact that King Mo was mocking on his role in the "A-Team."

Sonnen vs. Bisping is for title shot, but Chael says Silva will never fight him

Dana White released his first video blog for the card on FX today. One interesting scene includes the UFC president dealing with the withdrawal of Mark Munoz from the UFC on Fox 2 card. White is getting ready to release news of the new Chael Sonnen-Michael Bising fight and says the winner will get a title shot against the currently sidelined UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

White must know something Sonnen doesn't because the outspoken contender sounds pretty sure he'll never face Silva.

"I'm not going to fight Anderson either way. They can say whatever they want. Anderson is never going to do that fight," Sonnen told "The MMA Insiders" show last week on Las Vegas' ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "I hope he's healthy and has a good life, but I'm not buying into this mythical world that Anderson is going to some day sign a contract to fight me."

During today's UFC on Fox 2 conference call, Sonnen reiterated his theory and said Silva turned down the fight to their boss' face.

"He even said no to (UFC executive) Lorenzo Fertitta's face. Face-to-face, not over the phone — Lorenzo brought him out, sat him down, and said, 'This is the fight we want.' And Anderson said no," said Sonnen.

Sonnen knows management isn't pleased and questions the severity of Silva's back and shoulder injuries.

"They're not happy about it. The message to Anderson was this ' Chael is the opponent for you. You can fight him or you can't fight nobody. He elected to fight nobody,'" said Sonnen. "Dan Henderson said it perfectly, if the right opponent comes up, all of Anderson's injuries will go away."

Silva's next opponent will be known next Saturday night. A date and location is completely up in the air until Silva announces when he can officially return.

Rousimar Palhares spectacular leg lock finishes Mike Massenzio at UFC 142

Don't let Rousimar Palhares get near you in the Octagon. If he does, you're probably going to walk away from the fight with a limp

Palhares flashed brilliance in taking down Mike Massenzio, quickly getting a hold of his leg and finishing things with a heel hook just 63 second into pay-per-view fight No. 3 of the night at UFC 142.

Massenzio, a veteran of 19 pro MMA fights was blown away.

"That's a world-class athlete who was the better fighter tonight. I had the best camp of my career. I just got stuck. It wasn't my night. I'm really disappointed," said Massenzio.

Palhares (14-3, 7-2 UFC) has posted five submissions in seven UFC wins. The Brazilian has also had his brushes with controversy. Even after the referee stopped things, he's held on to several submission finishes a little too long in the past. Tonight, he behaved himself.

"What a great victory! It's what I always say when I get in there…if it's God's will then it is God's will. I went in there and got it done. I like submissions and I got another one tonight," said Palhares.

Guillard knows he can’t slip again tomorrow night on FX

Melvin Guillard doesn't want to go the way of George Sotiropoulos, Anthony Pettis and Evan Dunham.

Last year was a horror show for those guys. On the verge of getting a title shot, all three suffered a loss or two that sent that sent them tumbling down the lightweight ladder.

Guillard faces Jim Miller tomorrow night on FX (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT), with both fighters facing the same fate if they lose - at least another year before they sniff a title shot.

Guillard (29-9-2, 10-5 UFC) was hot as a pistol before UFC 136 in October, but lost his shot at Frank Edgar with a 47 second submission loss at the hands of Joe Lauzon. He knows this Miller fight is make or break time.

"It was kinda dumb, but I am young enough to learn as long as realize the mistake. I made the mistake, it didn't just happen," Guilard said referencing the loss to Lauzon. "I know that but I also know I'm still one of the best fighters in the division. But I am ready for this fight with Miller. He's a top guy, maybe the No. 3 or No. 4 in the division, and if I perform like I can do, I think it will be hard for people to say that I didn't deserve a UFC title shot."

Guillard is managing the delicate balance between fighter under control, but not losing his explosiveness

"It's not going to affect my style of fight, just so you guys know. I'm still going to go in and be the fast, explosive kid that I am. But right now, I just want to stay focused and grounded," said Guillard.

Miller is no easy prey and he enters the fight with the same motivation. He's coming off a rough loss to Ben Henderson. Miller (20-3, 9-2 UFC) fought with a flawed strategy and got lit up by Henderson, who locked up a title shot with the victory.

Erick Silva ‘s DQ will stand, but UFC implementing replay

Remember Erick Silva's bizarre disqualification at UFC 142? The one that caused the Brazilian prospect to go from jubilant to despondent in about .15 seconds? The one that made UFC commentator Joe Rogan call out referee Mario Yamasaki's judgment while in the Octagon? The one that made us all wonder why there's no instant replay in MMA?

Yeah, that one? It won't be overturned. Since the fight was in Brazil, with no regulatory commission, the UFC served as the regulator of the fight. They announced that they have no plans to change the fight to a no-contest.

From Marc Ratner, the UFC's vice president of government and regulatory affairs:

"Based on the referee's verbal warnings and his determination that the blows were intentional and a disqualifying foul, this is not the type of decision that can be reviewed," Ratner stated. "Therefore, the decision stands."

However, Ratner did share some good news. The UFC will start using instant replay at their self-regulated, international events, and will encourage state commissions to come into the 90s and use replay.

While it may not be the exact outcome that MMA fans -- or Erick Silva -- wants, it's still a good sign that the UFC is willing to make a change to improve the sport overall.

UFC 142 vlog: Dana White tells Vitor Belfort about Anthony Johnson’s situation

Dana White's latest vlog does a nice a job of showing behind-the-scenes coverage of how the Anthony Johnson weigh-in miss went down.

Vitor Belfort arrives at the arena (2:45 mark) and is blown away by the fact that Johnson wasn't going to make weight. He explains that his cut was tough. As he thinks about what to do, Belfort begins to intensely chew on a towel full of ice to get a little water into his system.

White gives him the option of not making weight either, but then he wouldn't get 20 percent of Johnson's purse. His nutrition coach Mike Dolce is brought into help make a decision and says Vitor is going to be professional and do his part.

Later in the video, Johnson is informed on stage that he has to weigh in again on Saturday and be under 205 pounds. The exchange between White and the fighter is cordial.
